NMSU student artists put on a Breast Cancer Awareness art show at The Bean on Friday, displaying their art and donating a portion of their sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Art students Alyssa Salome and Meg Freyermuth put the show together. "We had a show here in July that was really successful," Freyermuth said. "Alyssa thought of the idea to have a breast cancer awareness fundraiser show, and we decided to choose October because it's national Breast Cancer Awareness Month." Salome saw the show as an opportunity to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. "We wanted to do it for a cause and we really enjoyed doing it," Salmoe said. "Each artist is donating at least 10 percent of all their art sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation." The Bean provided a good venue for the show because of its accessibility and atmosphere. "We like doing art shows at The Bean and having an opening reception with music so that more people will come and so the art will be more accessible to younger and older people," Salome said. "We want people to come and look at art, support art and have a good time." The show was a good opportunity for student artists to show off their work. "We wanted more students from NMSU to show their stuff," Freyermuth said. "Particularly the undergrad students because they don't get a lot of opportunities." During the show the artists wandered throughout The Bean wearing name tags while they talked with patrons, sold art and created impromptu art pieces. "I'm all for keeping the community united and for using our personal talents for a good cause," said artist Rene Palomares. Palomares had one of the larger paintings in the show, titled "When winter comes," which features a dead goldfish, a voyeuristic snowman and a mysterious girl. "I like to keep it fun and do stuff that is not the norm," Palomares said. "I would've done more, but I'm self-conscious." Freyermuth's work highlighted New Mexico landscapes. "I just love this area and I'm going to be moving away so I'm just trying to capture and keep for myself some of the things I love about this place," Freyermuth said. "And I'm trying to get other people to see the beauty that I see in it." The show also featured works by NMSU artists Coy Hassell, Jess Reinard, Matt Bonhoff, Eric Hansen, Sonia Payan and Anndrea Davis and music by Richard Harris. "We had a lot of people and everyone was way receptive to the art," Salome said. "We had a really good time doing it and getting people excited about art." The Breast Cancer Awareness show will be up for the entire month of October at The Bean.
