For the first time under the helm of head coach Orin Richburg and assistant Paul Harkins, the Aggie cross country squads are competing at their annual home meet, the Kachina Classic, Saturday at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
Richburg and Harkins said they agreed this meet is exciting because it is the first time for the entire new family to attend or run on their home course.
"I am very optimistic about this meet this weekend because of how hard the student-athletes have been working," Harkins said. "It should be fun to run in front of our home crowd."
NMSU will depend on freshman talent Brandi Gutierrez to maintain her steady pace, as she has led the Aggies across the finish line throughout the first two meets.
On the men's side freshman Michael Hart is the pace setter for the Aggies, as he also led the squad throughout the season.
The women look to defend their 2006 Kachina Classic title, while the men try to improve their seventh place finish.
Leading the way for the Aggies last season was sophomore Ingrid Flores with a fourth place finish and a time of 19:37. On the men's side, senior Chris West, who is redshirting the season, led the way with a ninth place finish and a time 24:05.
