by Adam Middleditch News Reporter Members of the New Mexico State University National Model United Nations team earned a bronze medal in diplomacy during spring break in the largest annual college-level U.N. simulation. According to the Web site of the organization, 3,263 students of 226 universities on five continents attended the conference. Of those, 13 teams earned outstanding delegation awards, 16 teams earned distinguished delegation awards, 18 teams, including the NMSU team, earned honorable mentions, and 23 teams earned outstanding position paper awards. "I'm very proud of all of their accomplishments," said Jason Ackleson, the adviser of the group and assistant professor of government. The NMSU team represented the Philippines this year and met with Lauro Baja, the U.N. ambassador of the Philippines, group members said. During the simulation, the NMSU team represented the position of the Philippines in the General Assembly, the Security Council and the committee on the peaceful use of outer space, members said. Ackleson and the members of the NMSU team said they would like to see more students get involved with Model U.N. Team members said their time spent in the group has resulted in extraordinary friendships and experiences and has enhanced their skills in diplomacy, writing and other areas.
