A crew from an independent television production company that produces the Discovery Channel show "The New Detectives" will come to Las Cruces on Monday to start filming footage for a program about the murder of Carly Martinez. Martinez was an 18-year old freshman at New Mexico State University when she was kidnapped in January of 1998. She was found dead in March of the same year on a mesa west of Las Cruces; her body was naked and she had multiple stab wounds. Two Las Cruces men were later convicted in her death. Lt. Manny Terrazas, an information officer for the NMSU Police Department, which helped investigate the Martinez case, said a crew who work for the production company New Dominion Pictures will be filming on the NMSU campus on Tuesday morning. According to the Discovery Channel Website, producers choose cases for production because the role of forensic science in solving the crime was predominant. "They'll interview me as to my participation in the case," said Terrazas. He said the crew will also talk to other officers involved and film areas like Garcia Hall, where Martinez lived when she was kidnapped. Terrazas said he believes the NMSU police will have a limited contribution to the television program because the officers did not have much to do with the forensic part of the investigation. Lt. Juan Moreno of the Las Cruces Police Department said the crew will interview several department detectives who investigated the case. Terrazas has been given an idea about the production crew's itinerary. He said the crew has a thoroughly planned out schedule. The production company has been in contact with different agencies and businesses in town to help the project flow smoothly once the crew arrives. Terrazas said a similar program that airs on the Warner Brothers Network produced a show about the murder, and they also sent a crew to Las Cruces. He was interviewed for that program, so he has an idea of what to expect from the New Dominion crew. He said the company has "been very cognizant of how (the show) might affect the victim's family," and it has contacted Martinez's parents to talk to them about it. Terrazas also said the company shows a concern for reporting the story fairly and accurately.
