A confrontational presentation given by an evangelical preacher on NMSU campus Thursday led to the theft of the preacher's Bible and an assault on the student who took it.
Preacher Shawn Holes, from Lake Placid, N.Y., had his Bible ripped from his hands by an NMSU student while preaching his religious views to students. According to witnesses, the student grabbed the Bible and ran inside Corbett Center.
NMSU Police Officer Sal Betancourt confirmed that several students ran in after the suspect, tackled him to the ground, "roughed him up a bit," and then returned with the Bible. The student's name cannot be released at this time. Betancourt stated that the suspect then called law enforcement in fear that he would be beaten up again if he went outside.
Betancourt also cleared up accusations that someone was hit with a skateboard during the altercation between the students and said, "The victim did have a skateboard in his hands but he did lay it down. No one was injured."
In an interview with Holes, he said, "I did not condone them roughing him up. I would have rather the man taken the Bible than what happened to him."
Holes said he was unaware of what happened to the student until police questioned him.
"I hope that at least one of the boys involved in the fight apologizes to the kid."
Police say no charges are being filed at this time and unless the victim decides to press charges against the other students involved, no further action will be taken.
