An ex-student of New Mexico State University was arrested by city police Sunday for the harassment of NMSU President Barbara Couture.

Marshaun Lah-teef Quinney, 31, has been charged with telephone harassment, NMSU Police Chief Jaime Chavez confirmed.

This is not the first time Quinney has made persistent telephone calls to Couture, and it is also not the only office, or place, he has done so, Chavez said.

Quinney has a history of harassment and has been abusive via telephone and e-mail for the past three years, Chavez said.

Chavez said the motive behind Quinney’s abusive phone calls is not clear.

“Generally he wants to get back into campus, either through employment or re-enrolled,” Chavez said.

Fortunately, Quinney has never shown any qualities or signs that have lead police to believe he was going to attack anyone, Chavez said.

Quinney is described as being very articulate, well-dressed and intimidating if he does not get his way.

“He is very persistent,” Chavez said.

Quinney is being incarcerated. A trial date is yet to be set, and a judge will determine whether or not he can be released on bail.
