Crimson Cab and Pete’s Pick-Up are up and running and are available to all New Mexico State University students who need a safe ride home.
Funded by Associated Students of NMSU, Crimson Cab and Pete’s Pick-Up are free to all full-time students with NMSU ID cards, and both operate at night.
“[Crimson Cab is] a privilege more than a service,” said Jay Manganelli, director of services for ASNMSU. “When students are in a situation where they’ve been drinking and are a threat to themselves or don’t feel safe, we’ll pick them up.”
Crimson Cab is now being operated by a new company and is currently picking up students who need a ride home from anywhere in Las Cruces. The company that previously operated Crimson Cab, LCL Taxi Service, went out of business last year, and ASNMSU is now working with LC Taxi Service to operate Crimson Cab.
Manganelli said ASNMSU is trying to pass a bill through the senate next month proposing that morning pick-up be available to take a student back to his or her car if he or she used Crimson Cab the night before and left the car somewhere. Manganelli said this service would be useful for students and worth trying to achieve funding for.
Pete’s Pick-Up operates during weeknights and offers an escort for NMSU students from any location on campus to their residency or other location on campus.
“Crimson Cab is more of a pick up from a party. Pete’s Pick-Up is more toward the student who is studying or getting work done for school,” said Abby Goodin, assistant director of services for ASNMSU. “We don’t take the golf carts off campus anymore. But, we can drop students off at the closest area to their destination on campus.”
Goodin said the employees of Pete’s Pick-Up will be undergoing pepper spray training, for use in an emergency. Drivers will also have quick access to the contact information for on-campus police in case of an emergency.
“It’s going to be a safer program than just a ride home,” Goodin said. “I can see [operating during the weekdays] as an advantage, because anyone on campus can go out on a weekday,” Goodin said. “It’s easier, safer, to call [Pete’s Pick-Up] and get home right away instead of walking all the way from the library or wherever [at night].”
