Each year when Associated Students of New Mexico State University hopefuls are gearing up for election, the student body seems to turn up its collective nose. Some say the NMSU student body is apathetic or generally disinterested in what goes on in student government or administration.
I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with the article, “Tea Party protests federal Wilderness Act,” by Shannon Ostrowsky, in last week’s The Round Up. Ms. Ostrowsky did a very poor job of covering the proposed Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Wilderness Act, an issue that is very close to home and very important to many residents of Dona Ana County.
The Associated Students of New Mexico State University student government candidates have been announced, which means NMSU students can expect enlightened debates, fair election practices and a high voter turnout. Right? Well, we hope so. The voting process last year turned into an allegation-fueled spectacle, as violations were filed, a runoff election was slated, and an election officer and a special senate committee faced stark accusations.
