Letter: Preacher on crusade against students at NMSU

There are two kinds of people who wish to spread the word of God.

There are those like the kind gentlemen in suits who pass out Bibles, and there are those who feel the need to make a scene by unleashing their bottled up emotions by lashing out
at "corrupt" aggie students. Going off on an angry tirade doesn't promote a
welcoming atmosphere on campus.

I believe that the zealots have gone too far by creating an uncomfortable and
sometimes even threatening environment. Some of these so-called traveling preachers
have discriminated against students with ridiculous statements like saying that
girls who wear blue jeans are whores. There is even a YouTube video in which one
preacher asks a student if he is gay. I have seen some students get so upset that
they engage in shouting matches.

Enough is enough with the evangelical assault on our pride, identity, and personal
beliefs! We should not have to feel intimidated or scared while trying to get to
class.

Sincerely,

Forrest Pearson

I agree with what this writer is saying...I believe in free speech with reason. I don't like being yelled at and being told that I am a certain word just because I am in college. For example one guy was saying once that all college students are *****, because all college students do drugs, have sex, exc. I am not one of those students

I could not agree more with the first post....THEY ARE HIS BELIEFS. When we begin to condemn free speech in any form, it's a disgrace. I don't agree with this man in any way, but I support his right to feel and say what he thinks and believes.

Any one who is familiar with spiritual warfare will recognize this as a ploy to solicit condemnation and put the focus away from the truth: many false prophets will make their false messages known before the day of Jesus's return which of course no one, not even these false prophets. Freedom of speech is fine but notwithstanding that, it is wise to remember to say to our enemies when they attack us in some way the same thing that Jesus told his enemies when they hung Him on the cross: "Forgive them they know not what they do"

its ridiculous how people get so worked up about this. YOU ARE NOT BEING FORCED TO LISTEN TO WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY! You have the option to continue walking past them. The people who stand there arguing with them are just as bad as he is. You may not agree with his beliefs but that's just it, they are HIS BELIEFS. He is not making a barricade around students and forcing them to listen. Those who happen to listen to him are doing so by their own personal choice. I am not saying I agree with these preachers yelling at people, but I am saying this is one of the better things of this country and school; The freedom of speech. The freedom to say what you want. All these angry students should be happy that they at least come to a school that does not shut down someone else's opinion simply because they are not agreed with by everyone. If that is the case then shut down every single other person who sets up their tables around campus. I do not agree with Frats and Sororities, does that mean they should stop trying to convince people to "go greek" while they walk through Corbett? No. Someone may not agree with the people who hand out free condoms, they could say that they are "encouraging premarital sex" does that mean they should be stopped? No. There are so many other examples of people who are just sharing their opinions and beliefs with those who are WILLING and INTERESTED in listening to them. What happened to people? It seems as though people have become big babies to everything they see and hear. Yeah you don't believe in God so you get angry when we have a preacher on campus, SO WHAT! YOU ARE NOT BEING HELD AGAINST YOUR WILL TO LISTEN TO THIS MAN SPEAK! And neither is anyone else! If you don't agree with his opinions and actions then all you have to do is keep walking! You stand there arguing with them about how they have no right to impose their beliefs and pass judgment when in reality they DO have that right in this country. Just like you have opinions so do they. And if you're so angry about them imposing their ideas well good job because you're only helping them gain an audience when you stand there yelling right back at them. Seriously suck it up. Until you are being held against your will to listen to things like this then stop complaining; You along with everyone else on this campus have the freedom to walk past him and his opinions. One last time, because I am saying this does not mean I agree with his words or actions. It simply means that he has the right to speak as does everybody else, and we have the right to ignore him if we choose to.
